For performance listed below procedures the following special tools be required:

- Tachometer and stroboscope;

Air purifier service
|
The air purifier is equipped with a paper filtering element. Check of a condition and cleaning of an element should be made according to the schedule of routine maintenance provided above, but is not more rare than through each 3000 km on models of 4.2 l (see an accompanying illustration) and 5000 km on models of 3.0 l. |
Replacement of an element of an air purifier is recommended to be carried out not less often than through each 40000 km of run. Thus the interval should be respectively reduced, if the car is maintained in intense conditions. Before getting to an air purifier soaked-up air passes through a preliminary pyleotdelitel of cyclonic type where it twists therefore the most part of a dust is besieged on separator walls. It is necessary to delete the accumulated dust periodically with a way of a szhimaniye of a rubber cover in the form of a duck beak in the lower part of the case of a pyleotdelitel.

Paper filtering elements pour in are not subject to washing by gasoline or any other solvent. At an element propityvaniye it should be replaced with fuel or oil with the new. |

Give one or the several (depending on an air purifier design) nuts lambs of fastening of the top cover of an air purifier, remove a washer (ы). Release the remained clips, uncover and take filtering element from the main case of an air purifier.
Wipe from within a cover and the air purifier case, having carefully cleared them of a dust and oil deposits. Thus try not to allow hits of extraneous subjects and other garbage in a carburetor mouth
Check an element condition, in case of need replace it. Installation make upside-down. Thus pay attention to the next moments:
The element should be established strictly on the center of the main case of an air purifier;
Before tightening nuts lambs, fix the top cover clips;
At first tighten nuts lambs only before introduction them in contact to a cover surface, then hold on them on three turns.

Models of 4.2 l of late years of the release, equipped with system of injection of fuel (EFI) In an air purifier of the models equipped with EFI system the filtering element which does not need periodic cleaning between replacements is established vyazkostny.

Replacement of such filtering element is made through each 40 000 km of run (see an accompanying illustration), and it is necessary to consider this interval only rough, as in case of car operation in intense conditions. |

Disconnect a negative wire from the battery.
Disunite the electric socket of a measuring instrument of an air stream, disconnect from a measuring instrument vacuum hoses.
Release clips of fastening of the top part of a casing of an air purifier to the bottom.
Raise the top half of a casing and take filtering element. Installation make upside-down taking into account the next moments:
Before air purifier assembly carefully wipe both half of its casing from within and outside of moistened in oil rags, watching that the garbage did not get to a measuring instrument of an air stream.
Track correctness of installation of an element in the top half of a casing of an air purifier.
Track reliability of connection of electroconducting to a measuring instrument of an air stream.

Check of a condition and replacement of the fuel filter
|
In an impellent compartment examine the fuel filter on existence of signs of hit in it of dirt and water (on an accompanying illustration the arrangement of the fuel filter on models of 3.0 l is shown). In case of identification of those or if term of planned change of the filter approached, start its replacement. |
|
|
Take the filter from an assembly collar and press a clip near the filter a hose going from a fuel tank. At a tightening of a clip try not to damage a hose.
Establish under the filter drain capacity. Release shlangovy collars, disconnect the filter from the fuel line and merge the fuel remains from hoses in the prepared capacity.
Put on hoses the corresponding unions of the new filter and tighten collars.

Dump pressure in a power supply system, for what:
Give screws and lift the panel of the relay located in the neighbourhood with the battery located in an impellent compartment. Uncover and take a safety lock of the fuel pump on 15 And (see an accompanying illustration);
Start the engine and let's to it work on single turns to spontaneous останова. For a guarantee of completeness of dumping of pressure include for 10 seconds a starter;
Switch off ignition.
Disconnect a negative wire from the battery.

Connect hoses to the filter and reliably tighten collars of their fastening.
Establish into place a safety lock of the fuel pump and start the engine. Check the filter on existence of signs of leakages of fuel.

Adjustment of a tension of driving belts
|

In case of need weaken a lock bolt of the generator and rotation of an adjusting bolt achieve demanded effort of a tension of a belt (on deflection size).
Tighten a lock bolt of the generator, start the engine approximately for five minutes and again check correctness of a tension of a belt.

Driving belt of the steering pump
|
|
Press on a driving belt on a site in the middle between pulleys of the steering pump and a cranked shaft with effort of 98 N (effort of a thumb). The demanded deflection of a belt makes 11 ÷ 15 mm for models of 3.0 l and 15 ÷ 17 mm for models of 4.2 l.
In case of need weaken a lock bolt of the steering pump and rotation of an adjusting bolt achieve the correct effort of a tension of a belt (on deflection size).
Tighten a lock bolt of the steering pump, start the engine approximately for five minutes and repeat check of a tension of a belt.

Driving belt of the compressor of the conditioner of air
|
|
Press a belt on a site in the middle between pulleys of the compressor of the conditioner and a cranked shaft with effort of 98 N (effort of a thumb). The demanded deflection of a belt makes 6 ÷ 10 mm for models of 3.0 l and 8 ÷ 10 mm for models of 4.2 l.
In case of need weaken a clamping nut in the center of a tension roller and rotation of an adjusting bolt achieve the correct effort of a tension of a belt (on deflection size).
Tighten a lock nut of a tension roller, start the engine approximately for five minutes and repeat check of a tension of a belt.

Care of high-voltage wires
For the purpose of suppression of a radio noise of VV the wires laid between candles and a cover of the distributor of ignition, and also between the central plug of a cover of the distributor and the coil of ignition are equipped instead of a copper current-carrying vein with the coal core. Such core easily breaks, therefore it is not necessary to bend unduly wires and at a detachment from spark plugs to pull only for a tip, and at all for a wire. Care should be observed as well at connection of wires. Perelamyvaniye of the VV core of a wire can become the reason of admissions of ignition in the engine.

Measurement of resistive resistance of VV of wires

|
Having uncovered the distributor together with VV connected to it wires, start to measure serially resistance of each of wires, connecting щупы an ohmmeter to a candle tip of a wire and the corresponding plug in a distributor cover (see an accompanying illustration). Resistance should not exceed 30 kiloohms.
|
If the result of measurement exceeds value of 30 kiloohms, disconnect the corresponding wire from a cover of the distributor and repeat measurement already separately for a wire. If the result proves to be true, the wire is subject to replacement.
The increased resistance in a cover of the distributor can is connected with oxidation of its plugs. In this case traces of corrosion should be removed from plugs by means of a suitable scraper of the small size or an emery paper.

|
Also examine a distributor cover from within and outside on existence in it of cracks and coal paths between VV plugs. At detection of similar defects it is necessary to replace a cover.
Check also a condition of a coal brush in the central part of a cover of the distributor. in case of identification of traces of formation of an electric arch and other damages make replacement. |
Check of a condition and service of spark plugs
Condition check, cleaning and installation of interelectrode gaps of spark plugs should be made regularly, according to the schedule of routine maintenance of the car, through each 20 000 km of run.
Before removal of candles make sure of purity of candle niches in order to avoid hit in cylinders of extraneous subjects and small garbage. In case of need wipe niches or blow in them air, having used for this purpose the ordinary bicycle pump.
The working part of the candles which have been removed from the engine which were in a working mechanical order should be covered with an easy poroshkoobrazny raid from light brown to gray-golden color. After performance of service signs of wear and a normal obgoraniye of electrodes can be shown.

Existence on a working part of candles of a thick layer of oil deposits of black color (see an accompanying illustration) testifies to the excessive consumption of oil caused by a bad mechanical condition of the engine, or that candles with excessively low kalilny number are used. |

At an erosion of electrodes to the degree shown on an accompanying illustration it is necessary to consider a candle worn-out and it is necessary to replace on new, suitable type. |

The distortion of a candle key at a candle tightening appears the reason of emergence of cracks in an insulator of a shaft of a candle more often.

If the dinamometrichesky key near at hand is not available, candles should be tightened with extra care as pulling is fraught with carving failure in landing openings in a body of the head of cylinders made of a soft aluminum alloy. Enough after a tightening of candles will tighten manually them on 1/4 turns the special candle key equipped with a soft insert. |
Adjustment of gaps of valves (model of 4.2 l)
|
|
Engines in volume of 3.0 l are equipped with hydraulic pushers and do not need regular correction of klapanny gaps. On models of 4.2 l adjustment of valves should be made according to the schedule of routine maintenance of the car. |
|
|
Start the engine and warm up it to normal working temperature.
|
|
If adjustment of valves is made after performance of service of a head of cylinders or yokes, initial installation should be made on the cold engine. |
Remove the sleeve of an air inlet laid between an air purifier and a cyclonic pyleotdelitel of preliminary cleaning. In order to avoid dirt hit in the engine wipe suitable solvent a joint of a cover of a head of cylinders with the head case.
Disconnect hoses of ventilation of the engine, give fixing bolts and uncover heads of cylinders.

Turning the engine in the normal direction (see. The section the General information at the beginning of Head), bring the piston of the first cylinder into the provision VMT of the end of a step of compression. Thus the distributive label on a pulley of a cranked shaft should be combined with a zero label on a cover of a drive of the gas-distributing mechanism (see an accompanying illustration), and two valves of the sixth cylinder - to occupy the provision of overlapping: one, directly previous the closing, the second - to opening.

|
By means of an edge of 0.38 mm measuring щупа estimate a gap between an end face of a core of the inlet valve of the first cylinder and a working surface of its yoke (see an accompanying illustration). The edge should with easy resistance pass through a gap.
|
In case of need adjustments weaken a lock-nut of the adjusting screw of a yoke and rotate the screw, achieving demanded result. Having fixed the screw in the chosen situation, tighten a lock-nut. Once again repeat gap check the shchupy ambassador of a tightening of a lock-nut.
Operating similarly, check and modify gaps of the following valves: final first, third and fifth cylinders, inlet second and fourth cylinders.
Turn a cranked shaft on one complete revolution in the direction of normal rotation so that the piston of the sixth cylinder moved to the provision VMT of the end of a step of compression. The provision of overlapping specified above will be occupied respectively by valves of the first cylinder.
Now execute check and correction of gaps of final valves of the second, fourth and sixth cylinders and inlet - the third, the fifth and the sixth.
Establish into place a cover of a head of cylinders, having replaced if necessary sealing laying, and an air inlet sleeve.
Start the engine and check a cover of a head of cylinders on existence of signs of leaks. At identification of those eliminate the reason.

Check of kompressionny pressure
|
|
Disconnect wire VV from spark plugs.
Clear of dirt and garbage candle niches. Turn out candles.
Disunite the electric socket on the carburetor for prevention of operation of the electromagnetic valve of interruption of supply of fuel.
On models of 3.0 l disunite the electric socket of the distributor for the purpose of a de-energization of system of ignition.
On models of 4.2 l for a de-energization of system of ignition disconnect a positive wire from the coil. Zaizoliruyte a wire tip an adhesive tape for the purpose of prevention of casual short circuit.

Establish компрессометр in a nest of a spark plug of the first cylinder (see an accompanying illustration) (follow instructions of the manufacturer of the device).
|
Ask the assistant to open completely a butterfly valve and to turn the engine a starter. After reading of the maximum indication of a measuring instrument (usually that is reached on the third or fourth turn of the engine) the starter can be switched off.
Write down result and repeat check for the remained cylinders.
Compare among themselves everything taken readings (demanded values and an admissible difference between cylinders are given in size tables and adjustments at the end of the Management).
If kompressionny pressure in one or several cylinders is underestimated, make the following additional check:
Pour in in the corresponding candle opening (I) a small amount of impellent oil, for uniformity of distribution of oil in the cylinder (ah) turn the engine.
Repeat check of kompressionny pressure for this cylinder (ов).

Absence of any appreciable changes in indications can be considered as a sign of jamming, a burn-out, or damage of valves or violation of tightness of laying of a head of cylinders.

Ask the assistant to open completely a butterfly valve and to turn the engine a starter until the maximum instrument reading (it appears three-four turns usually enough) will be reached.
Write down the indication and repeat check for the remained cylinders.
Compare among themselves everything taken readings (demanded values and an admissible difference between cylinders are given in size tables and adjustments at the end of the Management).
If kompressionny pressure in one or several cylinders is underestimated, make the following additional check:

Service of the distributor of ignition
On the cars of the Patrol/Maverick series described in this Management one of two types of distributors is established. In models of 3.0 l the electronic distributor of ignition is used, on model of 4.2 l the distributor with the breaker of contacts is established.
Distributors are equipped with the special block which limiting the maximum turns with value of 5000 of ÷ 5400 in a minute and has received respectively the name of the limiter of turns. The block consists of the podpruzhinenny rotor button and a special cover which on reaching turns of the engine of critical value disconnect all spark plugs, except candles of the second and fifth cylinders.
Distributors with the contact breaker are equipped with replaceable contacts and the condenser and need regular service, greasing of a cam and the mechanism of the proof-reader of an advancing of ignition, and also cleaning of internal surfaces and cover components.
The electronic system of ignition does not need service, except periodic cleaning and check of a condition of a cover and the rotor button of the distributor, and also greasing of the centrifugal mechanism of correction of an advancing of ignition.

|
At work with components of electronic system of ignition or near them it is necessary to observe special precautionary measures in order to avoid receiving a trauma as a result of an electroshock. Remember that at secondary contours of such systems there is dangerously high voltage.
Before a rassoyedineniye and connection of electric sockets it is necessary to switch off ignition (a key - in the situation OFF) in order to avoid damage of components of system of ignition, or receiving an electroshock.
Before starting any adjustments of installation of a corner of an advancing of ignition make sure of serviceability of functioning of the centrifugal mechanism of correction of an advancing of ignition in the distributor. |
Replacement of contacts of the breaker
|
|
Uncover the distributor, give a fastening bolt a begunka.
Remove a begunok.
|
|
Weaken the screw of contact and disconnect NV a wire from the insulating block on contacts (see an accompanying illustration).
|
Weaken approximately on two-three turns screws of fastening of a plate of the fixed contact. Completely to unscrew screws follows only at special need.
Remove assembly of contacts of the breaker from the fixing screw and take contacts from the distributor.
Disunite the electric socket of the distributor.
Give clamping the screw of a clamp of NV of a wire and the screw of the plug of a wire of grounding on the distributor case. Turn out the fastening screw on the condenser case, remove condenser assembly from NV a wire and will throw out it.
Installation of contacts make upside-down.

|
New contacts of the breaker should be washed carefully out before installation in solvent for the purpose of removal from them an anticorrosive covering. |
Establish on the distributor the condenser and tighten the screw of its fastening. Track correctness of laying of NV of a wire.
Fill a little high-temperature greasing under a heel of the rubbing block of contacts of the breaker, a little greasing put also on working ledges of kulachkovy assembly.
Establish new contact assembly in a plate of the basis of the breaker and temporarily tighten fixing screws, having tracked correctness of installation of a wire of grounding.
Turn the engine so that the rubbing block of mobile contact appeared on a cam ledge.
Slightly weaken screws of fastening of motionless contact by means of a suitable screw-driver and shift a plate of contacts in the demanded direction, achieving a gap at 0.45 ÷ 0.55 mm between contacts (use shchupy lezviyny type - the edge of the corresponding thickness should pass in a gap with easy resistance). On termination of correction of a gap tighten screws of fastening of a plate.
Several times turn the engine and repeat measurement.
Connect NV a breaker wire to the insulator block on a wall of the distributor and establish into place the screen of the limiter of turns, a begunok and a distributor cover.
According to instructions of manufacturers connect to the engine a measuring instrument of duration of the closed condition of contacts of the distributor, a tachometer and a stroboscope and check installations of turns of idling, duration of the closed condition of contacts and a corner of an advancing of ignition.

Models of 4.2 l of late years of the release, equipped with system of injection of fuel (EFI)
The electronic system practically does not need service, though it is recommended to make periodically removal, cleaning and check of a condition of a cover of the distributor.
Absolutely wipe a distributor cover soft rags and carefully examine it from within and outside on existence of cracks. At detection of cracks, signs of an excessive obgoraniye of plugs or wear of a coal brush replace a cover with the rotor button.
The order of removal, check of a condition and installation of the distributor is described in the Section devoted to systems of injection of fuel and engine management in Head of the Power supply system and production of fulfilled gases.
Ruled connections of the diagnostic equipment
|
|
Some of tachometers, stroboscopes and analyzers of parameters of ignition of old type do not suit application in systems of electronic ignition. Before starting performance of checks make sure of the validity of the diagnostic equipment available at your order.
Do not allow casual grounding of a wire of a tachometer on weight in order to avoid failure of the measuring equipment or components of system of ignition. |
Stroboscope
|
Connect a stroboscope to a wire of a spark plug of the first cylinder (follow instructions of the manufacturer). The order of numbering of cylinders and the direction of rotation of the distributor of the engine of 4.2 l are shown on an accompanying illustration. |
|
|
At all do not disconnect a stroboscope with a food from the car battery at the working engine so the power surge can lead to generator failure.
Do not allow disconnection of VV of wires in order to avoid damage of components of system of ignition. |
Tachometer
|
|
Make sure that the available tachometer is suitable for check of system of ignition of your car.
In systems with the breaker of contacts connect alarm щуп a tachometer to the negative plug of the coil of ignition. Further connections make according to instructions of the manufacturer of the device.
In systems with the electronic ignition, equipped with the special socket for connection of a tachometer connect alarm щуп the device to this socket. Further connections make according to instructions of the manufacturer of the device.

Duration measuring instrument (on a corner) the closed condition of contacts of the breaker
To check duration of the closed condition of contacts of the breaker possibly only with use of this device. On models with electronic ignition this parameter is not subject to adjustment.
Connect alarm щуп the device to the negative plug of the coil of ignition. Further connections make according to instructions of the manufacturer of the device.
Adjustment of duration of the closed condition of contacts of the breaker and installation of a corner of an advancing of ignition on models of 4.2 l
|
|
According to the recommendations stated above connect to the engine a tachometer, a measuring instrument of duration of the closed condition of contacts of the breaker and a stroboscope. Start the engine and warm up it to normal working temperature.
By means of the adjusting screw expose turns of idling of the engine according to standard requirements (see size tables and adjustments at the end of the Management).
Check duration of the closed condition of contacts of the breaker (see size tables and adjustments at the end of the Management), in case of need make adjustment - for reduction of duration increase a gap in contacts, and on the contrary. For performance of this check the engine should be stopped, and the cover, a rotor and the screen of the limiter of turns of the distributor are removed.
On termination of correction of duration of the closed condition of contacts of the breaker transfer transmission to the situation "N" or "R" (AT) and start to vary engine turns in limits from single to 2000 in a minute, watching the measuring instrument indicator. If appreciable changes in instrument readings take place, check a distributor shaft on existence excessive lateral люфта, estimate degree of wear of a cam and check a condition of contacts of the breaker. Replace defective components.
|
|
After completion of procedures of replacement and/or adjustment of contacts of the breaker it is necessary to check installation of a corner of an advancing of ignition surely. At correction of a corner of an advancing of ignition there is no need for a detachment of vacuum hoses of the distributor. |
For check of installation of a corner of an advancing of ignition start the engine and warm up it to normal working temperature and leave working at single turns which should correspond to standard requirements (see size tables and adjustments at the end of the Management).
|
|
On models from AT check of installation and adjustment of a corner of an advancing of ignition should be made at the lever of the selector of transfers transferred to position "D". Thus by no means it is impossible to allow butterfly valve opening as the car can move out from a place. Do not forget to check reliability of raising of the parking brake. |
Having included a stroboscope, make sure that the label on a pulley of a cranked shaft is opposite to a mark 10 ° on a scale on a cover of a drive of the gas-distributing mechanism.
In case of need modify installation, having weakened a fixing bolt and having as appropriate turned the distributor.
After completion of adjustment tighten a bolt of fastening of the distributor and, in case of need, modify turns of idling of the engine. On models from AT track, that transmission was transferred back to the situation "R".
For check of serviceability of functioning of the mechanism of correction of an advancing of ignition:
Disconnect a vacuum hose from the distributor;
